Hexatonic scales are those who have 6 divisions . the simplest example is 6-EDO or whole-tone scale with 6 divisons with size of 200 cent ( temperd major second ):
0: 1/1 0.000 unison, perfect prime
1: 200.000 cents 200.000
2: 400.000 cents 400.000
3: 600.000 cents 600.000
4: 800.000 cents 800.000
5: 1000.000 cents 1000.000
6: 2/1 1200.000 octave
I call whole tone scale one type of 6-6 hexatonic scales.This type has a pattern as 222-222.
· 6-6 means that we have 2 great divisions per octave with size of tritone or 600 cent.
· 222 means that there are 3 equal divisions per tritone ( or Augmented tetrachord) which have size of 200 cent or major second.
· 222-222 means that there are 6 equal divisions of 200 cent making 2 tritones:
2 2 2 - 2 2 2
This way of naming tells us that:
1- We must divide octave into 2 great divisions : equal or unequal , so we can have m-n hexatonic scales
2- We must divide each of these 2 divisions into 3 divisions : equal or unequal , so we can have a pattern as abc in each tritone and abc-a'b'c' in each scale.( In http://www.xs4all.nl/~huygensf/doc/modename.html you can see that hexatonic scales are not considered as 2 great triple divisions but as 6 divisions.)
3- We can have hexatonic scales in many different tuning systems.
m-n hexatonic scales in 12-EDO
m and n are 2 great divisions of octave in hexatonic scales . If m=n=600 cent , we have 6-6 hexatonic scale.
6 is a symbol for 600 cent in 12-EDO or its multiples.But it is also possible to have m or n with size of 300,400,500,700,800 or 900 cent. So if considering m or n equal to 3,4,5,7,8 and 9 , we will have:
3-9 hexatonic scale
4-8 hexatonic scale
5-7 hexatonic scale
7-5 hexatonic scale
8-4 hexatonic scale
9-3 hexatonic scale
Notice that :
m+n=12 semitone
a,b and c are multiples of one semitone

As wrote before , 6-6 is a kind of hexatonic scale consisting of 2 equal divisions (tritone or augmented tetrachord), each divided into 3 parts.we can consider different orders for different sizes of these 3 divisions as:

1+2+3 ~ 123 = 6
